Tataouine
Tataouine is the market town of the far south, the last place of any size before the desert, and the base for the ksour of the hills around it. Three of them stand close by: two Berber villages on ridges, and one courtyard of granaries that is the finest of its kind.

Visiting Tataouine
Tataouine itself is a working town rather than a sight. It has a souk on two days of the week that brings people in from the hills, a wide main street, and the hotels that make it the place to sleep when the ksour are what you have come for.
The ksour are the reason. A ksar is a fortified granary: rows of barrel vaulted cells, stacked three and four high around a courtyard, built of mud and stone and reached by stairs set into the wall. Communities who lived scattered through the hills kept their grain and their oil in them, and the ones around Tataouine are the best kept in the country. Chenini and Douiret, the two ridge villages, are the other half of the day.
