Tamezret
Tamezret is a Berber village in the mountainous area around Matmata, where some of the houses are built into the hillside as troglodyte dwellings. It is still inhabited by Berber communities who keep their traditional practices. The ten and eleven day journeys pass through it on the way into the Matmata region.

Visiting Tamezret
Our guide to Tunisia describes Tamezret as a village of narrow, winding streets and clustered dwellings, with thick walls and small windows that insulate against the heat. Some of the houses are built into the hillside, a form of troglodyte architecture that uses the natural rock for shelter and insulation. It is an important place for understanding Berber culture and history, and because the village is still lived in it is a living example of Berber cultural heritage. It lies in the Matmata region of southern Tunisia.
On the ten and eleven day journeys the morning road from the desert goes by main and scenic back roads through the mountainous area around Tamezret before it reaches Matmata.
