Ksar Metameur
Ksar Metameur is a ksar, a traditional fortified village of the desert south, which our sheets present as their example of ksour architecture. The eleven and twelve day journeys reach it on desert tracks after Matmata, then drive to the coast and cross to Djerba.

Visiting Ksar Metameur
A ksar, plural ksour, is a traditional North African fortified village, found in arid regions, and the sheets use ksour as the term for the distinct type of architecture of this desert region. Ksour were built with fortified walls to protect the inhabitants from raids, with narrow winding streets and closely packed houses, and with thick walls and small windows to insulate against the climate. Many stood on trade routes, including the trans-Saharan ones, and served as trading posts. They reflect a blend of Berber, Arab and Islamic cultural influences.
The ksour of southern Tunisia, with the troglodyte habitat, are on Tunisia's Tentative List for World Heritage status, added in 2020. None is inscribed.
On the eleven and twelve day journeys the day leaves Matmata by desert tracks through the rugged settings of the desert, as it goes from arid to semi-arid, and arrives at Ksar Metameur. From the ksour you drive to the coast and take the Roman bridge to the island of Djerba, arriving at your hotel late in the day.
