Chenini
Chenini is a Berber village on a ridge in the hills west of Tataouine, its houses cut into the slope in steps and the ruin of its granary holding the crest above them. A white mosque stands on the saddle below the village, and the people who live there still work the terraces on the hillside.

Visiting Chenini
The village is built the way the hills allow. Rooms were dug back into the rock and walled in front with stone, so a house is half cave and half building, and the houses are set in rows one above the other up the slope. The old granary runs along the crest of the ridge above them, now mostly roofless, and the climb to it is the walk people come to make.
Chenini is lived in, which is what separates it from the ruined ksour nearby. The terraces below the village are planted, the white mosque on the saddle is in use, and the valley in front of it is a long stripe of olive and palm between two bare ridges.
