How many days in Tunisia: 7, 10 and 14 day plans

Seven days covers the Roman north, Kairouan and the coast. Eight adds Tozeur and the Sahara oases, ten adds a night in the desert at Ksar Ghilane, eleven reaches Djerba, and twelve spends its time on the coast at a lighter pace. We publish no 14 day programme; a longer trip is custom, priced after a call.

The six programmes side by side

Our private programmes run from seven to twelve days. This table counts where each one sleeps from its own itinerary on our journey pages, and then asks the three questions that decide how long a trip needs to be: does it reach Tozeur and the oases, does it sleep a night in the desert, and does it reach Djerba.

The private journeys by length: where you sleep, and whether the journey sleeps at Tozeur, at the desert camp at Ksar Ghilane, or on Djerba

The days include your arrival in Tunis, on day 1, and the transfer to the airport on the last day, so they do not include the flight from home. Getting to Tunisia from the US and Canada covers that. The prices are on what a private trip to Tunisia costs.

What each length reaches

Tunisia is nine regions on our map, from Tunis and Carthage in the north east to the deep south and the island of Djerba. This table shows which of them each programme sleeps in, which it only visits, and which it does not reach.

A 7 day plan

Two of our programmes run seven days, and they are different trips. Neither reaches Tozeur, Douz or the Sahara, and neither tries to.

Carthage, Kairouan and the Coast keeps to Tunis, Kairouan and the coast. It sleeps in these places:

  1. Tunis, 2 nights (the nights of days 1 to 2)
  2. Kairouan, 1 night (the night of day 3)
  3. Sousse, 2 nights (the nights of days 4 to 5)
  4. Hammamet, 1 night (the night of day 6)

From Carthage to Kairouan is the Roman sites. It loops from Tunis through the north west to Kairouan and the coast and back, and sleeps in these places:

  1. Tunis, 2 nights (the nights of days 1 to 2)
  2. Ain Draham, 1 night (the night of day 3)
  3. Kairouan, 1 night (the night of day 4)
  4. Sousse, 1 night (the night of day 5)
  5. Tunis, 1 night (the night of day 6)

A week is a choice between the two. The first is for the coast, the medinas and Kairouan. The second is for the Roman sites: Utica, Bulla Regia, Dougga, Sbeitla and Thuburbo Majus.

An 8 and a 10 day plan

The Splendors of Tunisia is the shortest programme that reaches the oases. It sleeps two nights at Tozeur, and from there it visits Chott el Gharsa and the Star Wars sets, the mountain oases of Chebika and Tamerza, and then crosses the Chott el Jerid to Douz and Matmata. It does not sleep at a desert camp.

Tunisia's Marvels adds the north west, with a night at Tabarka, and a night in the Sahara at Ksar Ghilane, reached by desert track after Douz. It sleeps in these places:

  1. Tunis, 2 nights (the nights of days 1 to 2)
  2. Tabarka, 1 night (the night of day 3)
  3. Kairouan, 1 night (the night of day 4)
  4. Tozeur, 2 nights (the nights of days 5 to 6)
  5. Ksar Ghilane, 1 night (the night of day 7)
  6. Sousse, 2 nights (the nights of days 8 to 9)

If a night in the dunes is the reason you are going, ten days is the shortest length that has one. If you want the oases and the salt flats, eight days does it. The months matter most for any journey that reaches Tozeur: see the best time to visit Tunisia.

An 11 and a 12 day plan

The Wonders of Tunisia follows the ten day journey as far as the Sahara and then turns to the ksour of the south east and crosses the causeway to Djerba, where it spends two nights. It flies back to Tunis on its last full day. Its sheet lists transportation as indicated without naming that flight, so ask us to confirm it in writing.

Tunisia's Mediterranean Treasures is a different shape. It stays on the coast at a lighter pace, from Gammarth to Tabarka, Hammamet, Cap Bon and Sousse and then to Djerba, and the list below gives the nights. It does not reach Tozeur or sleep at a desert camp.

  1. Tunis, 2 nights (the nights of days 1 to 2)
  2. Tabarka, 1 night (the night of day 3)
  3. Hammamet, 2 nights (the nights of days 4 to 5)
  4. Korba, 1 night (the night of day 6)
  5. Sousse, 2 nights (the nights of days 7 to 8)
  6. Djerba, 2 nights (the nights of days 9 to 10)
  7. Sousse, 1 night (the night of day 11)

A 14 day plan

We publish no 14 day programme, and this guide will not describe one that we have not planned with you. Our longest is 12 days.

A journey of any other length is a custom journey. Tell us the length you have and the places you want, and the days are built around them. It is priced after a conversation, with a firm price per person in the written proposal that follows, and we publish no estimate as a price. The table above is the place to start: it shows what each published length reaches, and so what extra days would be for.

How we counted

  • Where a programme sleeps is counted from the nights in its itinerary, and the regions from the place each night and each visit is recorded against.
  • A "visit" is a place the itinerary names for a day without sleeping there.
  • Nothing here is a driving time. Our programme documents do not give one, so we print none.

Questions and answers

How many days do you need in Tunisia?
Our six private programmes run 7 to 12 days. Seven days covers the north and the coast without the Sahara, ten adds the oases and a night in the desert, and eleven adds Djerba. Day 1 on every programme is the arrival in Tunis, and the last day is the transfer to the airport.
Is one week enough for Tunisia?
A week covers either the north and the coast, on Carthage, Kairouan and the Coast, or the Roman sites, on From Carthage to Kairouan. Neither seven day programme reaches Tozeur or the Sahara, so a week does not include the desert.
How many days do you need for the Sahara in Tunisia?
Eight days reaches the oases around Tozeur and sleeps two nights there. A night in the dunes at Ksar Ghilane is on the ten day and eleven day journeys.
How many days do you need for Djerba?
Djerba is on our eleven day and twelve day journeys, each with two nights on the island. The eleven day journey flies back to Tunis and the twelve day journey drives back to Sousse.
Do you offer a 14 day trip to Tunisia?
We publish no 14 day programme. Our longest is 12 days, Tunisia's Mediterranean Treasures. A journey of any other length is a custom journey, priced after a conversation, and we publish no estimate as a price.
Do the days include travel from the United States?
No. Day 1 on every programme is your arrival in Tunis, with your guide at the airport, and the last day is the transfer to the airport for your flight home. There is no nonstop flight from the United States, so the journey from home adds travel time on either side.

Where a figure is our own working on a source's numbers, the guide says so beside it. Figures about our own programmes, the prices, the itineraries, the hotels and the months we suggest, come from the programme documents behind each journey page.
