Visiting Thuburbo Majus
Thuburbo Majus was originally a Punic settlement before it became a Roman city, and it played an important part in the province of Africa Proconsularis. Its prosperity came largely from agriculture, in particular olive oil and grain.
The ruins are extensive and give a view of a Roman provincial city: temples, a forum, a basilica, public baths and residential buildings, laid out on a grid plan. The Capitolium is a temple to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. The forum is the central square, surrounded by civic and religious buildings. The baths include the Summer Baths and the Winter Baths. The House of the Bacchic Procession is a well preserved private house with intricate mosaics, and the mosaics at the site show mythological scenes, everyday activities and geometric designs.
On the archaeological journey Thuburbo Majus is the first visit of the sixth day, after the drive from Sousse, with Uthina to follow before the last night in Tunis. The sheet describes a significant Roman site with a large forum, temples and houses with mosaics.
