Nefta
Nefta is an oasis town west of Tozeur, close to the border with Algeria, built around a hollow in the ground that its springs once filled. The palm groves grow in the bottom of that hollow, below the houses, and the old quarters above it are built in the patterned brick of the region.

Visiting Nefta
The hollow is the thing to see. It is a natural basin on the edge of the town, and the springs that rose in it watered a palm grove that fills the whole floor of it, so that from the streets above you look down into the tops of the palms. The slopes are sand, and the green begins where the water is.
Nefta is built in the same yellow brick as the old town of Tozeur, laid in patterns that stand proud of the wall, and it has long been a centre of learning with many small schools in its quarters. It is the last town before the sand, and the road west of it runs to the border.
