Tunisia or Morocco for a first trip

Morocco is easier to reach from the US: Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop to Casablanca from New York, Washington, Miami and Los Angeles, while Tunisia has no US nonstop. Tunisia's economy-wide price level is lower, 0.33 of the US level against 0.42 (World Bank), though that is not a hotel comparison. Both carry State Department Level 2 advisories.

The two side by side

We run private journeys through Tunisia and none through Morocco, so this guide does not compare trips. It compares what is published about the two countries, with the source of each figure, and it says where a pair of figures is not like for like.

Advisories: the State Department's data feed, read on 11 October 2026. Flights: Tunisair and FlightsFrom for Tunisia; Royal Air Maroc's own release and FlightsFrom for Morocco. Tunisian visitors: the Ministry of Tourism, La Presse and Business News. Moroccan visitors: TelQuel, ATTA and Hespress. Prices: the World Bank and Numbeo.

Flights from the United States

This is the clearest difference. Tunisia has no nonstop from the United States. Morocco has several, and the airline's own release says Royal Air Maroc already serves New York, Washington, Miami, Montreal and Toronto, and that Los Angeles to Casablanca started on 7 June 2026 with three flights a week on a Boeing 787 (Royal Air Maroc).

FlightsFrom also shows Delta from Atlanta to Marrakech daily from 26 October 2026, and United from Newark daily from 24 October. Those two are from a schedule aggregator, so confirm them with the airline. Royal Air Maroc's Boston and Atlanta flights ended in June 2026.

Getting to Tunisia means one stop, in Europe or Istanbul. The routes, the airports and the entry rules are in getting to Tunisia from the US and Canada.

How to read the visitor numbers

The two headline numbers are not like for like, and neither is a count of Americans.

Tunisia counts land border visitors and Tunisians living abroad. From 1 January to 20 July 2025 there were 5,279,768 arrivals. Of them 2,748,687 were Algerians and Libyans, which is 52.1 percent on our arithmetic, 1,592,816 came from the European Union, 30.2 percent, and 805,361 were Tunisians resident abroad, 15.3 percent (La Presse). For 2024, Algerians and Libyans were 5.754 million of 10.264 million, 56.1 percent on our arithmetic (La Presse).

Morocco counts Moroccans resident abroad. At the end of July 2025, of 11.6 million arrivals, 52 percent were Moroccans resident abroad, according to the government's own portal. Foreign tourist arrivals in July 2025 were 875,000 (Government of Morocco).

Neither source page defines "tourist". So 19.8 million and 11 million cannot be set against each other, and the 2025 split between foreign tourists and Moroccans abroad is one we could not find for Morocco.

Price level

The World Bank's price level for household consumption is the purchasing power conversion factor divided by the official exchange rate. In 2025 it was 0.327 for Tunisia (0.980 divided by 2.997) and 0.423 for Morocco (3.960 divided by 9.350). It was 0.308 and 0.406 in 2024, and 0.296 and 0.406 in 2023 (World Bank, with the exchange rates from its official rate series).

Numbeo's crowd sourced index for 2026 mid year, with New York City at 100, puts Tunisia at 29.0 for cost of living, 5.0 for rent, 35.3 for groceries and 18.0 for restaurant prices, and Morocco at 31.2, 7.6, 33.6 and 24.8. Local purchasing power is 33.6 for Tunisia and 43.7 for Morocco (Numbeo).

Both measures cover the whole economy and not what a visitor pays for hotels, tours and meals. We found no published price comparison for tourism itself.

What a first trip to Tunisia is, from our side

We can only say what ours are. They are private journeys of 7 to 12 days, from $1,950 to $3,690 per person in a double room (our journey pages), planned with you in the United States and hosted by our own team in Tunisia. They start in Tunis and go to Carthage and the Roman sites, Kairouan, the Sahara oases and, on the longer ones, Djerba. The prices are on what a private trip to Tunisia costs.

Tunisia has ten properties on UNESCO's World Heritage List (UNESCO), the newest of them Sidi Bou Said, inscribed in July 2026.

What the figures say, and what they do not

  • If the flight weighs most with you, Morocco is easier to reach from the United States.
  • If the economy wide price level is what you care about, Tunisia's is lower on both measures above. That is not a statement about any hotel or tour.
  • Both countries carry a Level 2 advisory from the State Department. The wording differs, as the sources above show, and the places each covers differ too. Ours is in Is Tunisia safe for Americans?

What we could not verify

  • A tourism specific price comparison from a published source. None was found.
  • Tunisia's final 2025 visitor total. The ministry's figure is "passed 11 million" to 22 December 2025.
  • Morocco's 2025 split between foreign tourists and Moroccans resident abroad.
  • Delta's and United's Marrakech routes beyond what FlightsFrom shows. Those are an aggregator's snapshot and should be confirmed with the airlines.
  • Any comparison of World Heritage properties, which we did not make.

Questions and answers

Is Tunisia or Morocco better for a first trip?
It depends on what you weigh. Morocco has more nonstop flights from the US and more visitors. Tunisia has a lower price level on the World Bank's measure, and our private journeys of 7 to 12 days start in Tunis. Both carry State Department Level 2 advisories. We run only Tunisia, so this guide compares published figures and not trips.
Are there nonstop flights from the US to Tunisia or Morocco?
None to Tunisia. Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop to Casablanca from New York JFK 1 to 2 daily, Washington 1 daily and Miami 3 weekly, and from Los Angeles 3 weekly since 7 June 2026. FlightsFrom also shows Delta from Atlanta and United from Newark to Marrakech, daily from late October 2026.
Is Tunisia cheaper than Morocco?
By two published measures, yes, but neither is a tourist price list. The World Bank's price level for household consumption in 2025 is 0.327 of the US level in Tunisia and 0.423 in Morocco. Numbeo's crowd-sourced restaurant price index is 18.0 for Tunisia and 24.8 for Morocco, with New York City at 100.
Which gets more tourists, Tunisia or Morocco?
Morocco reported 19.8 million tourist arrivals in 2025, and Tunisia's minister said it passed 11 million. The counts are not like for like: Tunisia's include large Algerian and Libyan land border flows, and Morocco's include Moroccans living abroad.
What are the State Department advisory levels for Tunisia and Morocco?
Both are Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Tunisia's cites terrorism, crime and unrest and was published on 21 May 2026. Morocco's cites the risk of terrorism and was published on 3 September 2026.
