Le Kef

Le Kef is a hill town in north west Tunisia, built in terraces below a kasbah that stands on the ridge above it. It is the nearest base to the Roman cities of the interior, and its own old town is a maze of stone lanes, springs and shuttered houses.

Visiting Le Kef

Le Kef stands high on the side of a mountain, and the kasbah above it is the first thing you see from the road. Two forts, one inside the other, hold the top of the ridge, and from their walls the plain runs away west toward the border with Algeria. The old town falls in steps below them, with stone stairways between the houses, the springs that gave the town its water, and a mosque, a basilica and a former synagogue standing within a few minutes of one another.

The country around is the high steppe of the interior, wheat and olive and cork oak, and it is the part of the province of Africa that Roman farming made rich. Dougga is within reach to the east, and the road north runs through the forest toward Ain Draham and Tabarka.
