Sousse

Sousse is a coastal city on the Sahel with sandy beaches and a walled medina that UNESCO inscribed in 1988. Its Ribat is a fortress-monastery from the 8th century, and the archaeological museum in its Kasbah holds one of the most important collections of Roman mosaics in the world.

Visiting Sousse

Sousse sits on the coast, with long sandy beaches, and our guide to Tunisia calls it a very easygoing introduction to the country. It has also kept its old town: the medina of Sousse is a walled old town of narrow streets, traditional houses and souks, which UNESCO inscribed in 1988.

The Great Mosque and the Ribat are in the medina. The Ribat is a fortress-monastery that dates to the 8th century, and you can climb its tower for views over the city and the Mediterranean. The Sousse Archaeological Museum is inside the Kasbah. It holds one of the most important collections of Roman mosaics in the world, with objects from the Punic, Roman and early Christian periods.

On most of our journeys Sousse is the base for the coast, usually at the Movenpick Sousse, or similar, for between one and three nights depending on the programme. The days here take in the medina and its souks and Port El Kantaoui, and the seven and twelve day journeys add a guided quad bike tour. Several journeys arrive here from El Djem, and the twelve day journey returns to Sousse, which its sheet calls the pearl of the Sahel, from Djerba for its farewell dinner.
