Visiting Djerba
Djerba is an island off the south east coast of Tunisia, and the sheets describe it as reflecting the slow pace of island life. The journeys reach it from the mainland by the Roman bridge. The island has a diversity of mosque architecture that differs from the architecture of the cities, and that varies a good deal within the island itself. Our guide to Tunisia adds sandy beaches, Berber villages with whitewashed houses and narrow streets, and local arts and crafts.
Houmt Souk, the main town, is the economic heart of Djerba. It is small and easy to walk around, and one of the best places in Tunisia for shopping, with markets, traditional handicrafts and historic buildings. Guellala is a town known for its pottery, and there is a relatively new private ethnographic museum there. Djerba is also home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, which dates its presence on the island to more than 2,000 years, and to the Ghriba synagogue. Djerbahood, a village of street art, is on the island too.
The eleven and twelve day journeys spend two nights on the island, at the Radisson Blu Djerba, or similar. The first day is given to Guellala, the Ghriba and the souk at Houmt Souk, and the next morning is unstructured: your guide, driver and vehicle are there for any exploring that sounds interesting. The twelve day journey then drives back to Sousse, and the eleven day journey flies back to Tunis in the late afternoon. Djerba lies inside the path of totality of the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027.
